Welcome to my blog, "Cooking for One." This is a blog about the trial and error of a young woman learning how to support herself. Whether it be about the lesson I learned when I washed a pair of pants with a whole pack of gum in the pocket (put ice on the gum and whatever you do don't put the clothes in the dryer); or how I learned that there is no need to boil an entire pound of pasta for one person, no matter how hungry you are.
A little bit about me... I am a 23-year-old who recently moved to a new city on my own, not knowing anyone. There have been many humorous moments over the months as have learned what it means to run a household.
For instance, the first night that I lived in my apartment, I was sleeping soundly when I was awoken by a beeping noise. I spent hours hunting for the source of the noise to no avail. I woke up the following morning, sleep deprived, expecting to hear the continuous beeping sound, but I didn't. I went through the whole day moving things around the apartment, never once hearing this beeping noise. I began to think I had made it up in my mind.
However, that night as I was going to sleep, I began to hear this beeping noise again. I thought, "I really MUST be crazy!" I waited in my bed for a little while before getting up and running around the house opening every drawer and cabinet in the entire apartment. That is when I finally discovered the source of the beep: a tiny cricket. Needless to say, I screamed before dousing the poor bug in bug spray.
The moral of the story is this: don't doubt yourself. There are times when you live alone that you are forced to be your own support system. You won't always have someone to help you rant about a bad day at work or tell you that you did a good job with dinner so be prepared to be your own biggest fan. Oh, and always have a can of bug spray handy!
